The Connecticut Office of Manufacturing outreach plan is to promote the state's manufacturing sector, foster innovation, and attract talent. As part of their outreach efforts, OOM aims to create visually appealing stickers that encapsulate the essence of Connecticut's manufacturing expertise. This case study delves into the design and thought process behind crafting stickers that resonate with the target audience and align with OOM's objectives.
OBJECTIVE
The primary objective is to design stickers that showcase Connecticut's manufacturing excellence, innovation, and pride. These stickers will serve as conversation starters and promotional tools during career fairs, manufacturing events, and ambassador engagements.
DESIGN PROCESS
Research
Conducting thorough research was crucial to identifying the most fitting main icons for each sticker. The goal was to imbed each sticker with profound significance that resonated with Connecticut's manufacturing landscape.
Sketching
Sketching in this process was essential for the sticker designs as it aided in generating ideas, conceptualizing designs, iterating on concepts, visualizing possibilities, and streamlining the design process. It acted as a fundamental stage to hone in on our concepts, leading to the creation of stickers that are both impactful and meaningful.
Designing
When designing these stickers we kept with the brand guidelines of the specific color, font and we incorporated the new CT logo as a small little touch in each sticker design. These guidelines can be found on CT’s website about new branding.
Design Concepts:
“Run Silent, Run Deep, in Connecticut” - Submarine Sticker:
Design: The sticker features a sleek submarine with waves, representing Connecticut's rich history of submarine manufacturing and naval innovation.
Thought Process: By incorporating the iconic image of a submarine, the sticker pays homage to Connecticut's significant contributions to naval technology and underscores its position as a hub for maritime excellence.
“Elevating Care, with Smart Innovation” - Smart Watch Sticker:
Design: A modern smartwatch symbolizes Connecticut's commitment to healthcare innovation and advanced manufacturing.
Thought Process: The smartwatch serves as a metaphor for precision engineering and technological advancements in healthcare devices. It highlights Connecticut's role in revolutionizing medical technology and improving patient care through innovation.
“I Love You, to the Moon and Back” - Astronaut Sticker:
Design: An astronaut floating in space against the backdrop of the moon conveys Connecticut's aerospace achievements and aspirations.
Thought Process: The sticker evokes a sense of wonder and ambition associated with space exploration. It celebrates Connecticut's contributions to aerospace manufacturing and underscores the state's commitment to pushing the boundaries of human achievement.
“You Can't Fly Without Connecticut”- Plane Sticker:
Design: A stylized airplane soaring across the sky represents Connecticut's role in aviation manufacturing and aerospace engineering.
Thought Process: The airplane symbolizes Connecticut's pivotal role in aviation history and its ongoing commitment to aerospace innovation. The sticker emphasizes the state's significance in enabling air travel and advancing aerospace technologies.
UTILIZATION STRATEGY
Career Fairs: At career fairs, these stickers will serve as attractive giveaways to engage with prospective talent. They will spark conversations about Connecticut's manufacturing landscape and its career opportunities, fostering connections with students and job seekers.
Manufacturing Events: During manufacturing events, the stickers will be distributed to industry professionals and attendees, reinforcing Connecticut's reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse. They will act as tangible reminders of the state's expertise and capabilities in various sectors.
Ambassador Engagements: When representing Connecticut at ambassador events, these stickers will be valuable tools for showcasing the state's strengths to external stakeholders. They will help convey a compelling narrative about Connecticut's innovation ecosystem and its collaborative approach to manufacturing.
CONCLUSION
Through thoughtful design and strategic utilization, these stickers will play a vital role in promoting Connecticut's manufacturing expertise fostering connections, and enhancing the state's reputation on both local and global stages. By aligning with Connecticut Office of Manufacturing’s objectives, they will contribute to the ongoing efforts to attract talent, spur innovation, and drive economic growth in Connecticut's manufacturing sector.
It was a collaborative effort with Chief Marketing Officer Anthony, who came up with the initial idea. I refined his first design and created additional manufacturing-related stickers. Working with him on this project was a fantastic experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed designing these fun stickers to represent manufacturing in the state!
