All You Need to Know About Visual Design
What is Visual Design?
Visual design is a part of the design process that aims to improve a product's/product's aesthetic appeal and usability. This can be done through images, typography, layout, color space and etc. A succesful visual design does not take away from the content on the page or function. But instead when done right, the user may find the site visually appealing and it can create a conversation. Designers tend to intentionally place elements to optimize the users experience for the better overall experience.
What are the five visual-design principles?
Scale
Visual hierarchy
Balance
Contrast
Gestalt
These five visual design principles are very important in order to create an effective and appealing to the eye design. Each and every principle has an important role to the overall meaning of visual design. These principles allow us to understand how various design elements, including lines, shapes, colors, grids, and space, can connect to produce comprehensive and thoughtful designs. This process is way more complex then you may see from first hand. All crafted sites, apps and etc have so much thought behind them to make the best user experience as possible.
Scale
The principle of scale refers to the important elements of design. Those that appear larger compared to the ones that are less of importance. The reason that the larger sized elements are directly connected to something of importance is because a larger-sized component is more likely to get more attention. Effective design results from the integration of three different sizes, contributing to a strong hierarchy and facilitating clear differentiation.
Visual Hierarchy
The principle of hierarchy is directing the viewer's gaze across the interface, prioritizing elements based on their significance. Visual hierarchy is established through adjustments in scale, color, spacing, placement, and other cues. Similar to the pinciple of scale, having 2-3 different typeface sizes helps establish a visual hierarchy.
Balance
The principle of balance pertains to the evenly distributed visual elements across the interface. These elements should be distributed evenly, not necessarily symmetrically, on both sides of an imaginary axis. While the axis is typically vertical, it can also be horizontal. The goal is to achieve balance in the visual weight of elements rather than simply matching the quantity on either side of the axis.
Contrast
The principle of contrast involves placing visually dissimilar elements together to highlight their differences. Contrast creates a noticeable distinction, emphasizing the uniqueness of each element. This can be achieved through the use of color; for instance, the color contrast between the different products, photos and etc.
Gestalt
The principle of gestalt refers to our tendency to perceive elements as a whole rather than separately. It is a set of theories that describe how humans perceive and interpret visual information.
